Initiatives by Wacoal's Human Science Research Center

To fulfill women's wish to be more beautiful, Wacoal's Human Science Research Center has conducted uncompromising scientific research on women's physiques and developed technology based on its findings.

In 1964, Wacoal established the Human Science Research Center as an organization dedicated to scientific research on women's beauty, with the aim of helping women to express their beauty through our products and services. Based on the physique measurement data accumulated over many decades, the Center successfully derived and announced the "Principles of Physical Aging and Beauty (body changes associated with aging)," giving unique advantages to Wacoal products and services.

What Wacoal Can Do for Women to Be Beautiful

Wacoal's goal is to "contribute to society by helping women to express their beauty." As part of efforts to achieve this goal, the Human Science Research Center was established in 1964 to carry out scientific research on women's physiques and develop technology based on its findings. At present, the Human Science Research Center comprises 33 personnel, 22 of whom are female, and their research covers a wide range of areas, from internal tissue and physiology to perception, psychology and lifestyle.

Data Collected from 40,000 Women are Used for Manufacturing

In the 1960s, when the Human Science Research Center was established, most domestic innerwear was produced on the model of that of Western countries. In those days, however, Wacoal had already recognized the importance of conducting scientific research on Japanese women's physiques and developing products based on such research findings. Only innerwear suited to the body shape of each individual can fulfill its full function, such as enhancing the body line, supporting the body, and keeping the breast and hips, which gradually sag down, lifted in an ideal position. As one of its core research activities, the Human Science Research Center has measured the physiques of Japanese women and developed fitting dummies by age and size, based on the learning obtained from the accumulated data.

The Center has measured the physiques of women, using the universal Martin measurement method and, as necessary, a state-of-the-art noncontact three-dimensional measurement device. Using these methods, it has measured the physiques of approximately 1,000 females between the ages of 4 and 69 every year, and as a result has accumulated data on more than 40,000 women and girls. It has also conducted measurements and analysis according to specific research purposes, such as research on changes in the measurements of the same individual over 30 years, changes in the physiques of girls aged from four to 18, and changes in the physiques of women after childbirth. Product development based on these results has afforded Wacoal distinctive advantages.

In 1965, Wacoal's Human Science Research Center announced the "Golden Proportion" beauty standards for Japanese women, which was the first attempt in Japan to present the most beautiful figures according to height. In 1979, it went even further and announced the "Beautiful Proportion" beauty standards for Japanese women, presenting realistically ideal figures by age.

In 1995, the Center proposed the "Golden Canon" beauty standards for Japanese women, which focuses on an ideal proportion that shows off each woman at her most beautiful, rather than on an ideal proportion for all women. In 2000, we announced "Spiral Aging," a principle that women undergo three major physiological changes associated with aging throughout a 30-year period from 16 to 46, and that with these as turning points, women experience major changes in their physiques.

Changes in Women's Body Shapes with Age Identified

In April 2010, as the culmination of data collected on Japanese women's physiques over 45 years, the Human Science Research Center announced the "Principles of Physical Aging and Beauty (body changes associated with aging)." These Principles statistically and scientifically clarify the changes in women's body shapes with age.

Behaviors and Attitudes Characteristic of Women Who Experience Less Change to Their Body Shape

We conducted a follow-up survey of women who had experienced less change in their body shape, and it was found that they shared distinctive features in terms of their habits of "exercise," "diet" and "innerwear."

Research findings applied to product development and sales at shops

The results of the research by Wacoal's Human Science Research Center are presented to employees responsible for product development at a research and development meeting held twice a year. The "Principles of Physical Aging and Beauty (body changes associated with aging)" was also presented at this meeting, eventually leading to the development of products that meet changes in body shape associated with aging, such as "PARFAGE," "LASÉE," and "gra•P."
These Principles are a powerful weapon for Beauty Advisors who sell Wacoal products in shops, and they use this special knowledge to propose the most suitable products to customers.

Wacoal Helps Women All Over the World to Express Their Beauty

Changes in body shape as a result of aging are a major concern not only of Japanese women but also of women throughout the world. To address this issue, Wacoal established its affiliate Wacoal (Shanghai) Human Science R&D Co.,Ltd. in China in 2002. Since then the affiliate, consisting of seven Chinese women researchers, has been measuring the physiques of Chinese women in northeastern and southern China. Through measurements to date, the researchers have discovered that there are two types of Chinese women: those who fit innerwear in Japanese sizes and those with body shapes particular to Chinese women. Their research has also revealed that unlike Japanese women, Chinese women prefer a rounded bust. These research activities have enabled us to develop products that better fit Chinese women as a whole.

Taking full advantage of research activities conducted by Wacoal (Shanghai) Human Science R&D Co.,Ltd., we have provided women both in Japan and abroad with products and information that satisfy their demands. Through such efforts, we will continue to play a role as a reliable partner of women who want to become more beautiful.
